Cote d'Azur

France’s Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, also known as Région Sud ('Southern Region'), is located at the far south-eastern point of France. The largest city is Marseille, France's third largest city after Paris and Lyon and the 2nd largest urban area when combined with Aix-en-Provence. The region offers a wide variety of landscapes, from the Alps and costal areas such as the French Riviera (or Côte d'Azur), the Mediterranean coastline of the southeast corner of France. In winter, you can ski down snow-covered slopes with a breath-taking view of the Mediterranean. It includes famously glamorous beach resorts such as Saint-Tropez, Cannes, and Monaco, and towns such as Avignon offer historic charm further inland on the banks of the Rhône. A winter health retreat in the 18th century, the area later attracted aristocrats, artists and the 1960s "jet set." The French Riviera is a major yachting and cruising area with several marinas along its coast, hosting 50 percent of the world's superyacht fleet! The French Riviera benefits from 310 to 330 days of sunshine per year, 115 kilometres (71 miles) of coastline and beaches, 18 golf courses, 14 ski resorts and 3,000 restaurants.
